Y. S. Chowdary’s political journey began with Telugu Desam Party (TDP). On 20th june 2019 the Telugu Desam Parliamentary Party in Rajya sabha merged with BJP. Consequently, he along with three other colleagues in the house became members of BJP. Y.S. Chowdary served the Union Council of Ministers as a Minister of State for Science and Technology, & Earth Sciences from 2014 to 2018.

On November 9, 2014, during the first Cabinet Expansion of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s NDA Government (National Democratic Alliance), of which the Telugu Desam Party was a constituent, MR. YS Chowdary was appointed as the Minister of State for Science & Technology, & Earth Sciences.

In 2010, MR. YS Chowdary ran unopposed and was elected as a Member of the Parliament to the Rajya Sabha representing Andhra Pradesh for a second term as a TDP nominee.

He was also elected as the Leader of the Telugu Desam Parliamentary Party (TDP) on June 4, 2014.

The Ministry of Science & Technology promotes new ideas in science and technology and plays the role of a nodal department for organizing, coordinating and promoting science and technology activities across the country.

The Ministry of Earth Sciences is mandated to provide the nation with the best possible services in forecasting weather/climate parameters, ocean state, earthquakes, tsunamis and other phenomena related to earth systems through well-integrated programmes. The Ministry also deals with science and technology for exploration of ocean resources and play a nodal role for ocean research.

MR. YS Chowdary was perhaps the first minister in India to have a vision for having a Nobel Prize for an Indian researcher working in India by 2030. He has initiated cross-functional teams to work on several projects in conjunction with leading Indian academic and premier research institutions.
On March 8, 2018, the two TDP ministers in the Narendra Modi government, Ashok Gajapathi Raju and Y. S. Chowdary submitted their resignations as Ministers in the Union Cabinet over the issue of the Special Category Status (SCS) to Andhra Pradesh, following the announcement by Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu to withdraw support to the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance.
